Trail Description

Comfortably Numb - Whistler's Epic. To consider yourself a real mountain bike town you have to have an “epic” ride. Moab has Porcupine Rim and Slick Rock. The South Chilcotin has Windy Pass. Whistler has Comfortably Numb. The trail is about 24 km with more than 1300 vertical meters of twisting technical climbing.

While any local worth his salt could piece together a seriously epic ride by connecting their favourite single track (witness the Samurai of Single-track: a Whistler legend) it would be difficult to describe to a stranger. Comfortably Numb is point to point: Route finding is not an issue. It begins 12 km north of the Village at the Wedgemount turn-off . Cross the bridge over the Green River and go left at the junction and bear right at the next opportunity up towards the Wedgemount trailhead. Look right for a signed single-track entrance. It starts with a friendly, moderately diffi cult climb utilizing natural terrain, granite features, some nice bridgework, old logging grades and great views before you start a short but technical descent.

Shortly you will arrive at another junction. Young Lust, your last chance to bail out, drops right in a fun descent to the valley where you will go right to complete your loop at the Wedgemount turnoff or left to the Green Lake Loop, a rather strenuous but interesting route back to the Village.

For those of you with lots more time and enthusiasm the fun just begins with a left at the blue sign and down to the Al Grey Memorial Bridge. It’s worth your time to check out the bridge which spans a canyon section of Wedge Creek. It was designed by Randy Symons, built mostly with materials on site and is a collaboration of the RMOW, WORCA and the donations from the developers of Stonebridge Plateau. From here it’s 20 plus kilometers of classic twisty, turney, hilly and creative single-track back to the Village. It’s the kind of ride that’s totally enjoyable when you’re on your game and interminable when your not. I’ve seen a high-end NORBA racer throw his bike in disgust as he tried and keep up with well-seasoned local veterans. The history of Comfortably Numb should interest communities wrestling with mountain bike issues. From the usual Whistler rogue beginnings, it was accepted by local and provincial governments and is now protected as part of our official trail network. ‘Numb was envisioned, designed and built almost single handedly by Chris Markle, one of Whistler’s most accomplished trail builders. Chris was also responsible for Kill Me Thrill Me.
